Project Goal
The International Centre for Sustainable Cities ICSC, with funding from the Canadian International Development Agency undertook a 36-month project to help local women in two cities in Sri Lanka, that were impacted by the Tsunami, to become involved in the decision-making process in their communities, and provide them with livelihood training and support.

Project Location
The project is taking place in two cities in Sri Lanka: Moratuwa (177,500 population), and Matara (102,000 population
The first task for the women in these two communities, Moratuwa and Matara on the west coast 50 kilometers south of Colombo, was to become involved in the design, construction and programming of the Community Resource Centres.

Builders Without Borders Services
Builders Without Borders provided construction  advice, contract preparation, tendering procedures, cost control measures and reporting and during the design, tendering and consttuction stages.
A BWB consultant participated in the a project planning workshop at the start of the project in Sri Lanka and a local architect, engineer and contractor were engaged.
Builders Without Borders, was asked to participate in the design process and advise on the tendering and construction.  A BWB consultant participated in a community design workshop with the local women’s group, government officials AMU Architects and the Sri Lanka partner Sevanantha.
A  BWB builder, Ralph Heading, undertook an inspection part way through the construction for the Canadian client and funding agencies.

The Addition of a Family Medical Clinic.
An early request from the, Moratwura  community was to add a medical clinic to the centre which additional funding was required. Beedie Construction A Vancouver Developer and builder generously  offerd to fund the construction of the clinic.
The Moratwura resource centre and medical clinic is a 2,800 sq.ft two story concrete building with infill masonry walls.  The1,350 sq ft clinic is on the ground floor and the 1,450 sq ft women’s  resource centre is on the first floor.

Construction
Construction commenced in January 2007 and is expected to be completed in June 2008, and the training progran commenced in 2007 and will continue though 2009
